Blame it on the Super Harvest Moon

As of the time of this writing, we are readying ourselves for tonight's Super Harvest Moon. If you read this when it has already passed, then I hope you saw a glimpse of this exciting lunar eclipse!

Black cat with pumpkins and gourds

Yes, the internet is full of cat pictures these days, but September seems like a good time to share an autumn harvest photo with one of my absolute favorite felines. I guess the Super Harvest Moon is making me giddy for all things cats and pumpkins! It is a departure from this website's rose-saturated images of the past year. Besides, the only roses blooming now are Knock-Out roses, with the occasional Peace Rose or another hybrid tea rose that is tired of this finicky growing season. The roses aren't the only ones, because I quickly tired of finding random bugs and even a few lizards hiding underneath soil. Now, I wonder if there are fire ants, although we have yet to reach a consensus on the identity of these new arrivals. The potential fire ants were almost the last straw, but when I braved the elements for one more foray into the garden, I was DONE. A few weeks later, after declaring I would never step foot in the garden again, lovely flowers were blooming, such as zinnias, amaranth, and even gardenias. Then, the moonflowers finally appeared a few days ago, after several months of waiting and nibbling from visiting deer. It seems the moonflowers did not want to miss the Super Harvest Moon, either.

So, ignoring earlier declarations of "NO MORE" gardening activities, lettuce seeds were planted right before the Super Harvest Moon. Whether or not you believe in growing based on moon phases, it does not hurt to hedge one's bets, right? If it works, then great! We will have homegrown lettuce for Thanksgiving. If not, then we will learn a lesson about following folklore. Either way, we can blame it on the Super Harvest Moon.
