Just a quick update, although you probably already heard the news: The Top 3 horses at the Kentucky Derby were Sovereignty, Journalism, and Baeza. All three share ties to the two horses named Flora, who have been featured in previous posts. However, all three are also descended from some of John Randolph's horses in Virginia, thanks to his famed son of Sir Archy named Roanoke.

Also, more information has been discovered about the horses named Flora, including a note about the one belonging to John Randolph. The American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine (Volume 1, Number 8) states the following:
"Flora is believed, by many good judges, to be the finest mare in Virginia..."
That is certainly interesting news, so more research is necessary. Meanwhile, it's not too late to raise a mint julep for all the horses who bravely raced through muddy conditions, and congratulations to all who helped these elite horses make their way to the Kentucky Derby!
