Sadly, a horse named Valley of Fire passed away after practicing at Churchill Downs, the site of the Kentucky Derby. Valley of Fire was a distant cousin of the two Floras mentioned in previous posts.

A rose for Valley of Fire

Valley of Fire was a 3 year-old gelding who was practicing with 40 other horses. Both front legs were fractured, and it was decided to euthanize the horse. This makes me really sad. While it is easy to get excited about the festivities behind these horse events, this has dampened my enthusiasm, I must admit. Reports indicate the rider was injured, too, so this is just a sad time all around.

I don't know the circumstances behind what happened, and it seems that people were truly concerned about what was best for Valley of Fire in this situation. Such a sad time.

Rest in peace, Valley of Fire.
